Biography

Dr. Simon Urschel, originally from Germany, obtained his medical degree from the Medical School of the Johannes Gutenberg University. He went on to complete a Residency in Pediatrics and a Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the Ludwig Maximilians University. At the Stollery, in addition to his role as a Cardiologist, Dr. Urschel is the Section Chief of the Pediatric Heart Failure and Transplant program, the Clinical Director of the Pediatric Cardiac Transplant program, and a Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist (specialized in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation).

 

Based on his transplantation expertise, Dr. Urschel chaired WCCHN’s Policies and Guidelines in Pediatric Heart Transplantation Working Group who authored transplant guidelines now used by more than 20 centers around the world including Boston, Stanford, and Toronto. He regularly presents to colleagues through network-wide Transplant Educational Rounds.

 

Dr. Urschel also holds extensive international experience, having worked in clinical settings in Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and now Canada. As an active educator, Dr. Urschel has previously served as a mentor to medical students at the University of Alberta. As a researcher, he has received significant funding from organizations including the Canadian Institute for Health Research, the Evans Family Research Team Grant in Pediatric Cardiovascular Research, and the Enduring Hearts Foundation.
