BC Children’s Hospital cardiac surgery program in Vancouver and Stollery Children’s Hospital cardiac surgery program in Edmonton are participants of the Society of Thoracic Surgery’s (STS) national database. Data has been diligently submitted to the registry since 2012.

The STS National Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons. The STS National Database is an internationally renowned clinical outcomes registry that helps participants measure and improve patient care. In addition, the Database provides participants with:

  • Well-developed and detailed risk models
  • An opportunity to compare surgical outcomes to STS benchmarks; and
  • Valuable aid in administrative, business and marketing decisions

Institutions in Australia, Brazil, India, Israel, Italy, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates are among the 1400 participants representing more than 4000 cardiothoracic surgeons worldwide!

The STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD) is the largest database in North America dealing with congenital cardiac malformations. The CHSD contains more than 373,000 congenital heart surgery procedure records and currently has more than 800 participating physicians, including surgeons and anesthesiologists.

Participating in the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database offers:

  • A standardized format for data collection to assess the care of patients undergoing congenital cardiothoracic procedures
  • Semi-annual performance outcomes reports in a format that allows comparison of local outcomes against national standards
  • Analysis of major outcomes and process-of-care measures that impact congenital heart surgery patients
  • Complexity scoring to evaluate clinical characteristics of the participating surgical centre
