Biography

Dr. Holger Buchholz is a Cardiologist as well as the Director of the Pediatric and Adult Artificial Heart Program at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Buchholz began his medical career as a Registered Nurse before completing medical training at Campus Benjamin Franklin, in Berlin. He subsequently migrated to Canada and completed several fellowships at the University of Alberta.

 

Dr. Buchholz is recognized as an international Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) specialist and trainer. He helped develop (and currently leads) the Stollery/Mazankowski VAD Program, and was the previous Chairman of the Scientific Committee at the First South America Workshop for Ventricular Assist Devices in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He also serves on several scientific boards (as a VAD specialist) for organizations including HeartWare, Levitronix and Abbott.

 

Outside of clinical activities, Dr. Buchholz is also an active educator. He currently serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and regularly lectures at medical schools across Europe and South America.
